July 2004 Beautification Award Home Owner Comments

Bob & Esther Burroughs moved into 5055 Stratford Road on December 21,
2001--facing a multitude of renovation tasks, both inside our new home...and most
certainly, outside. After finishing up the inside in six weeks (which, of
course, turned into 6 months), we began working on the outside. Most obvious in
the back of the house were large vines that had been allowed to grow into tall
trees and they had begun to pull the trees over. Spending about two months in
this area, it was finally cleaned, pruned, cleared and ready for new scrubs,
plants, trees, and flowers. We have perennials that flower at various times of
the year and have planted about 400 bulbs that appear ever so briefly each
Spring.
This Spring, we added an arbor on the right side of the house using river
stone as foundation and plants and new trees on either side, and added a gateway
in which to enter. It has brought us great peace... to sit and enjoy the
quiet in this place. In the back, near the deck, we removed overgrown bushes and
plants, and added a jacuzzi tub on a concrete platform, and added more river
stone to compliment new plants and small trees. In the front of the house, we
removed all dead plants, added new ones, pruned others and rimmed our front
and back yards with stone, giving the yard shape and design.
It has been a real pleasure for us to do this work in our yard and it is
delightful for us to receive the July Home Beautification Award from the Meadow
Brook Home Owners Association. Feel free to come by and view our landscaping.
We'd welcome you for a "cook's tour" of our yard."
